Punch Bags

Vinyl punch bags are produced from heavy grade of pvc which is backed with a woven fabric for extra strength. After cutting, this is stitched to form a tube of the required dimensions with a fixed bottom and a zip on top. Three anchor points are then added to which a suspension device can be added.

The punch bags are then filled with some type of heavy material, usually rages or off cuts of fabric, this ensures that the finished punch bag is hard whilst retaining a shock absorbing outer. This material is then compressed an much as possible before the zip fastener is closed.

The suspension device, which generally consists of 3 webbing straps or steel chains which are joined by a ring at one end, is then attached to the anchor points on the punch bag by means of metal attachments.

Leather punch bags are manufactured in much the same way, except that the bag is cut from heavy cow hide. The suspension device may also be made of leather.

Sometimes punch bags can be supplied empty and the customer uses their own filling material. Although the bag it's self is much the same price, carriage costs are drastically reduced, a full punch bag can weigh up to 45Kg whereas an empty one only weighs a few kilograms.

To use, punch bags must be hung from a suitable point, such that they are clear of the floor so that they are free to swing. Ideally the centre of the punch bag should be in line with the user's shoulders. They can be hung from the wall using a bracket or the ceiling by a hook. Extra care must be taken to ensure that the substrate is strong enough to support the punch bag. For example ceiling hooks should be screwed into wooden joists and wall brackets should be festered into brickwork.

The punch bag is now ready for use. It is advisable to wear bag gloves when striking the bag in order to protect the knuckles. Some people may also use hand wraps inside the glove to give extra protection and padding whilst others way just use the hand wraps.

Suitable for either gym or home use, punch bags are used for training by main sportsman and athletes. They proved an excellent form of aerobic exercise whist improving upper body strength, hand eye coordination and general fitness.
